LONDON (AP) - Britain's military says one of its officers has died from a wound sustained while fighting in Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Defense says that an officer from the 1st Battalion, The Welsh Guards, died Tuesday at a hospital in the English city of Birmingham after being flown in from Afghanistan.
The military says he was involved in an unspecified «incident» near Haji Halem in Afghanistan's violence-wracked Helmand Province Saturday when he was shot.
It did not immediately name the officer or supply further details regarding the incident. It says next of kin were at his bedside when he died.
The death brings to the number of British military personnel killed in Afghanistan since fighting there began in late 2001 to 158.
