Someday, western liberal feminism will have to answer for what it has done to the women of Afghanistan, in justifying invasion, occupation, and mass murder.
However, if I were an Afghan woman, I too, would stand against the law that encourages women to satisfy her husband every four days in Afghanistan. Although it is hard to know when, or how the government would gain an accurate picture of what was really going on in one's sanctuary, in my opinion, dialogue around this establishes a dangerous precedent. I stand in solidarity with those who have raised objections to this law now. Although I know that there are many decent men in Afghanistan that would never dream of forcing such strictures upon their women, I hold that women have the right to the physical integrity of their bodies, and that is absolutely non-negotiable for me personally. Even if you are my husband, you cannot, and ought not, force me to sleep with you. That is not trust, and that is not genuine concern for the mental, physical, and emotional health of your partner. True love arises from the spontaneity and generousity of a woman's impulse for her husband.
Why I believe in women's rights and the feminist struggle:
In the United States, 1.3 women are raped every minute by a man. That results in 78 rapes each hour, 1872 rapes each day, 56160 rapes each month, and 683,280 rapes each year.
1 out of every 3 American women will be sexually assaulted by a man in her lifetime.
1 in 7 women will be raped by her husband.
Only 16% of rapes are reported.
